We came to the decision to build a swimming pond after a long period of reflection.
We’d had a number of family chats about wanting to build a pool, but we were hesitant because you can’t enjoy traditional pools all year round and they also have substantial maintenance costs.
When we started hearing about swimming ponds, we began to embrace the idea of having an area of water at our disposal that would serve an aesthetic and ecological purpose in the garden even during the winter.
One of the things that we like the most is unquestionably the impact that it’s had on the garden around it. The area where we had the swimming pond built was a largely neglected part of the garden. There was an old stable here that we renovated and turned into an annexe. Around it, we built the swimming pond and some ornamental ponds containing water lilies.
It now plays a central role in our family’s life, not just because we can swim here but also because we can gather here in the evening and have a chat, enjoy drinks before dinner or read a book. We spend a lot of time here with both family and friends.
In addition to what I’ve already said, another positive aspect is that the swimming pond has attracted all sorts of animals, such as dragonflies, goslings and herons. During the lockdown, we even had hares and a hawk. It’s wonderful to see the wildlife and enjoy its company.
Another positive aspect is that after the first two or three years, the swimming pond’s natural cycle was in full swing and it now keeps itself clean, so no action is needed on our part.
The only downside is that at the start we put two goldfish in there and over the years they’ve multiplied. It’s become a bit of a problem because there are so many of them.
I’d recommend it for everyone. I think it’s a superb investment for anyone who has room in their garden.
It needed a little upkeep initially but I enjoyed doing it because it was an alternative way to spend time in the garden.
It’s had a very positive impact. It’s incredibly relaxing to be able to do a few lengths when we get home from work.
Our friends and relatives are always happy to pay us a visit and – as I said – we really make the most of the area around the swimming pond. It’s a real treat to dangle your legs in the water and have a chat.
My daughter’s getting married soon and the fact that we have a swimming pond is one of the reasons why she chose to use our home as the venue.
We’ve had it since 2015 and we only wish we’d got one sooner. We’re so pleased with it that we’re probably going to have one built at my son’s house.
Taking a dip in a swimming pond fills you with natural, peaceful sensations, but actually we very often just soak our feet in the water to cool down. Rather than swimming in it, we largely just tend to enjoy its company.
Our friends have tried it out as well. While the youngsters are happy to dive in, it takes older people a little longer to take the plunge. They look at it, ask, try it and end up adoring it.
At first we tried to keep our dogs out of this part of the garden but now we let them wander around the pond freely and they have lots of fun with all of the animals. When we aren’t around, they cool down in the areas where the water is shallower.
