A swimming pond on the site of an old hen house

Type:
Swimming pond
Zone:
Province of Brescia
Year:
2010

The customers wanted to turn an old patch of land with a colonnade into a weekend and holiday home with a garden and a swimming pond.

They are city dwellers who asked us to create a country garden capable of bringing back childhood memories, with a pool that fits in with its surroundings. The design needed to take into account the needs of the customers’ grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as those of the family dog: a friendly old dachshund.

Once the colonnade had been magnificently renovated and a charming apartment had been built there, the focus switched to the part of the land that was previously home to a hen house.

We designed and built a beautiful, low-maintenance garden using plants from the local area. We included a fruit and vegetable garden because one of the customers likes to grow her own food. Then there is the swimming pond itself, complete with wooden decking. It is 2.5 metres deep and all of the younger members of the family have become expert swimmers in it. We also built a pergola supported by chestnut wood posts with the bark stripped from them. Wisteria and old roses climb up it and form a screen that helps to prevent people from looking into the garden. We then put up a little wooden hut like the local hunters use in wetlands. It is near the shower area and designed to be used as a changing room. Young but tall trees provide shade alongside an old pear tree, fig and Oriental persimmon trees, and neighbouring hazel trees.

The gate of the fruit and vegetable garden faces the swimming pond and young vines grow on a pergola leading to the entrance of a small tower.

It is truly delightful to take a dip in a swimming pond surrounded by greenery and to stretch out on the warm wooden decking, enjoying the sight of a garden that blends in so seamlessly that it looks like it has always been there.

The swimming pond is also astonishingly enchanting to behold in the snow.
